G.4.24 – Brickwork Facade Installation Issues

Introduction:

Brickwork Facade is one of the most common façade types used to clad the opaque areas of the building envelopes in the UK. In order to achieve various performance requirements in modern building façades a number of different materials have been utilised within the brickwork façades.

Metal bracketing are commonly used to transfers the brickwork façade loads and cavity trays are most commonly used to achieve the intended drainage performance. Whilst the traditional cavity trays are made out of a DPC membrane, these days a metal cavity tray with Class A fire classification has been utilised. In this article, attempts were made to discuss some of the most common design and installation workmanship issues in relation to brickwork façade using real life examples of the author.
